The DeviantArt Impersonator

11/29/04: Uncle Bergie, in his infinite vanity, searches for ZONK on Google and finds a new one... apparently, our own Nic McFiendish has been posting some really great drawings on DeviantArt.com. The funny thing is, Uncs just saw her draw a funny picture of Walt last night, and while it wasn't BAD, it certainly wasn't THIS good.

11/30/04: Uncle Bergie writes to McFiendish, emailing her a copy of one of the drawings, with the question "Is this your drawing?".

11/30/04: Nic writes back... "No. Why do you ask?"

Turns out, someone pretending to be "McFiendish", is posting drawings along with ZONK lyrics and song clips, even, scarily, incorporating some of Nic's history into her own... like talking about her own kids, then mentioning winning the Music for America contest. Odd. It's somewhat amusing, and we decide just to watch and see what happens.

12/6/04: Nic posts this on our news page:

Dec 06 '04 :: Concrete Blonde Tour & Impersonator
ZONK is off to L.A. to play a couple dates with Concrete Blonde! While we're there basking in the glory of Johnette and company, we hope McFiendish's impersonator doesn't make any trouble. Wanna know more? Check out Deviant Art.

We have no idea who this talented artist is, but it sure ISN'T Ms. McFiendish...
1/3/04: A not very happy message is posted on our message board:
Mon. Jan 03 '05 too bad...
I have to say I'm really disappointed that McFiendish would steal my friend's drawings and pretend to be a good 'pencil artist'. The deviantart account "zonkaholics" is a hoax and I'll be sure my friend (and other REAL artists online) know that most of those drawings you've been stealing are his. To the rest of you guys, your music might be cool, but too bad that chick is an internet poser :/

Tue. Jan 04 '05 Taro, I don't think you quite understand...
The McFiendish on the deviantart site is the 'imposter' McFiendish was mentioning on the news page. We thought it was a pencil artist pretending to be a musician... you think it's a musician pretending to be a pencil artist.... turns out we're both wrong.

About a month ago I sent Nic a graphic from this site saying "I didn't know you could draw". She says "I can't." We find it amusing, and ignore it. Here's the site, for those of you watching from the sidelines. Notice that the particular artist is now 'banned'.

1/3/04: The REAL artist, Michael Greenholt, emails ZONK to assure us there is no hard feelings, nor is he the impostor:

Hello Uncle Bergie,

My name is Michael Greenholt and I'm an animation artist from Burbank, California. This morning I got an email telling me that someone was posting my artwork in a deviantArt gallery and claiming it to be their own. The deviantArt gallery was called "zonkaholics" and had a lot of information about your band and links to your site. I followed a link to your news page and read that someone has been impersonating your singer McFiendish.

It seems that the same person who is impersonating McFiendish is also stealing my artwork. I just wanted to let you (and ultimately McFiendish) know that I have nothing to do with the devianArt account and that it ISN'T me who is pretending to be McFiendish. The webmasters from deviantArt have been notified about the image theft.

I have also encouraged people I know to not send angry emails to you and your band because no one knows who is actually responsible for the deviantArt page. If anyone has sent such emails to you on my "behalf", I'm very sorry and did not put them up to it.

I hope this can help clear things up. I don't want anyone to think badly of your band and I certainly don't want anyone to think badly of my artwork.

Mike
